Bharat Ratna for Sachin??????

Government of India making changes in rules for awarding Bharat Ratna so that even sports personalities (Sachin Tendulkar) can also be awarded. Making changes and including sports personalities is a good idea. But modifying it only for one person makes me think that does Sachin really deserve it???

Tendulkar is the first and the only player in Test Cricket history to score fifty centuries, and the first to score fifty centuries in all international cricket combined; he now has 99 centuries in international cricket. He has scored 14810 and 18111 runs in test n ODI cricket. He is the only batsman to score a double century in ODI. He has played maximum number of tests n ODIs. He played in 6 world cups and was a part of winning team of 2011. No doubt about him being a greatest cricketer ever.

But before considering Saching for Bharat Ratna award, we should think of other sportsmen also who have made our country proud in the past.

Milkha singh is one of them. The Fying Sikh.  He won Gold Medals in both 200m and 400m events at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, clocking 21.6 seconds and 47 seconds respectively. At the 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth Games, he improved his 400m timing to 46.16 seconds, and grabbed a Gold Medal again. He thus became independent India's first gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games.

We should also think of Major Dhyan Chand. He was regarded as the world's greatest field hockey player of all time. He  won 3 Olympic gold medals (1928 Amsterdam, 1932 Los Angeles, 1936 Berlin).  Cricket legend Don Bradman had said abt him "He scores goals like runs in cricket".

We should also consider Geet Sethi for Bharat Ratna. He is a six-time winner of the professional-level and a three-time winner of the amateur World Championships, and holder of two world records, in English billiards. His major titles are :
  • World Professional Billiards Champion: 1992, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2006
  • World Amateur Billiards Champion: 1985, 1987, 2001
  • Gold Medallist, 13th Asian Games, Bangkok 1998
  • Asian Billiards Champion: 1987
  • National Billiards Champion: 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1997, 1998
  • National Snooker Champion: 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988.
How can we forget Leander Paes?  His Grand Slam record says all. He has played 13 men-double's finals and won 6 times. He played 11 mix-doubles finals and won 6. His highest world raking was 1 in doubles.

If we talk about Leander, we should not forget Mahesh Bhupathi also. Even his world ranking was 1 in doubles. He won 4 out of 10 men-doubles finals and 7 out of 11 mix-double finals.

We should also consider Kapil Dev for his contribution to cricket. He held the record of maximum wickets in test cricket for a long time. Also, he held a record for maximum runs (175*) in ODI.  He led Indian team to the first world cup victory in 1983. IPL is also based on ICL which was a thought of Kapil Dev.

We have so many legendary sport persons, then why we only think of Sachin Tendulkar for Bharat Ratna? Just because we love game of cricket??? I also respect him as a player, his playing skills, a person and his achievements. But government should think about other sport persons before him who have made our country proud over a period of time. Sachin has many records in his name. But I think its his personal achievement and society has not got anything out of it. Sachin preferred IPL over WI series which was very imporatnt to keep our number 1 position in test cricket. But he preferred to play in IPL n take rest from WI tour. As a senior player, he should have motivated other players to play in WI than in IPL. He earns in crores, still he did nt forget to ask govt to waive off excise duty on imported car. Does this behavior deserve India's highest level award?? Anyways, govt had given Bharat Ratna to some non-deserving people before also.

Cricket is not even our national game. This game is not even recognized at Olympic level. Calling the event, that ICC organizes after every 4 yrs, Cricket World Cup is also funny. How can World Cup be played by just 8-10 countries? It should be Cricket Commonwealth Cup as only commonwealth countries play this game. Other games are played all over the world and thus those achievements are always bigger.

We always say, cricket is given unnecessary importance. If govt gives Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar keeping other sports and sport persons aside, it will send a wrong message in society. So govt should think twice before taking any decision.
